Someone asked about the older devices… again… and the lack of multitasking. Steve explains: the majority of our user base is running on newer devices. Everyone is going to love the update, they just might not be able to multitask. If it encourages them to upgrade… that’s not really a bad thing.

After thought… where is Genius for the iPad App Store. I’d love to have that functionality, but haven’t seen it in there.

Hmm… it looks like we could see some App Store updates in the near future. Steve’s explaining them as two separate ecosystems that they can modify independently. I think he realizes that the App Store browsing structure could be improved and hopefully they’re working on that. For example, right now… we can’t just browse the free apps… we get the top free apps but not all of the free apps. Kinda sucks for people who don’t want to drop $10 on every app.

Steve: if our competition ever develops something like the iPad, they’ll be lucky to reach 3,500 applications in a year… we did that in a week.

Steve said that he’s received thousands of emails saying how the iPad has changed people’s lives. It hasn’t changed ours… yet. It’s just cool.

Someone just asked about unsigned applications… steve says it won’t happen. here’s why: there’s a porn store on Android and if Apple went the unsigned route, that would show up on the iPhone. He says they don’t want to go there, so they won’t be allowing unsigned applications.

Steve and I agree… this is a problem, according to him. Basically, he’s saying that you’re still going to be able to use the apps, just that older devices are under powered and that you won’t be able to multitask. I’m happy they decided to limit it and make it work for the newer devices… if you read our article about future-proofing the iPad, you should get that.

Developers will be able to put restrictions on certain features of their app by checking the hardware. So, you’ll still be able to use the applications but you won’t be able to multitask or some more complicated functions on older hardware.

Haha, Steve just admitted that Apple tried to buy AdMob but Google snatched them out from underneath them. Awesome. He’s a big fan of Quattro wireless though.

Steve answered the lock screen post in a very non-committal way. We hope that they see the value in it and add it to the new features of the OS before it’s launch. Please, Steve… pretty please?

Someone asked about lock screen information… we’re still surprised that they didn’t release an API for display your app information on the lock screen… it’s really a handy tool.

I guess Scott makes a good point. They don’t need “multitasking” when they have on-phone push notifications. That would work just fine. In fact, I can’t think of a way twitter or AIM could use multitasking that push notifications would handle.

Hmm… someone just asked about twitter timelines and AIM conversations… that’s a good question, there wasn’t any discussion of that at all.

Ads are all done in HTML5. Ad developers have free reign as long a they stick to that environment.

Apple will be limiting ads in some fashion… obviously no porn ads, but they want to make money like the next guy, so don’t expect it to be all THAT limiting.

Question: will your social gaming network kill those from the likes of ngmoco and aurora feint? My answer: yes. Scott’s answer: they wanted something everyone could be involved in, instead of something only a few people use. Basically that’s him working his way around the issue and saying that yes, it will kill aurora feint.

Someone asked if AT&T was ready for the increased data with multitasking… Steve says it’s not going to be an issue, I’d agree. We’re going to be using the same amount of data, we can just get it done quicker.

We’re sticking around for the Q&A… but we’re nearly done here.

So we didn’t see anything blatant about wireless printing, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t show up before the release. It still feels like a hug oversight for the iPad. Apple wants to make it a productivity device, but it’s very unproductive to sync it and try to print documents that way.

Hey, Apple. Hire more developers so you can work on the iPad OS this spring and release it this summer. It’s not rocket science. I actually just hated my iPad a little bad. Damn.

All the features are coming to the iPad this fall… WTF? why wouldn’t you release side by side?

Finally, they’re killing some app support for older devices. This sucks for people who own them, but it needed to be done so we can keep the innovation moving.

The Developer SDK is available today, I think… they keep saying that it’s a developer “preview.”
